What Is Inpatient Drug Treatment and How Can It Help You Overcome Addiction?

Inpatient drug treatment can be a powerful and effective service for people who are struggling greatly with addiction. There are so many benefits of inpatient drug treatment that you may not find with other forms of care. Addiction is often a chaotic, painful cycle that feels impossible to break. You may face so many triggers throughout your daily life that you just can’t figure out how to take the first steps toward sobriety. Inpatient drug treatment disrupts this cycle because it takes you out of the environment that is causing you so much pain. It allows you to take a step back from your life and reset.

Inpatient is a safe and contained environment, which is what many people need in the early stages of recovery. Eventually, you will learn how to face your daily life while staying sober. At first, though, you need the time and space to build a strong foundation. Inpatient is your opportunity to focus only on your mental health and recovery.

Peer support during inpatient drug treatment can be valuable, too. You get to connect with others who are going through the same process, and it’s helpful to know that you’re not alone. Your peers can be a great source of wisdom as well.

What to Expect

It’s normal to feel nervous before you begin inpatient treatment. Remember that you’re making an incredibly important decision for yourself and that your treatment team is here to help you.

Before you arrive, you should receive detailed instructions for what to pack and what to expect during your stay. Inpatient drug treatment centers typically have strict rules to ensure that patients stay safe and focus solely on their recovery. For instance, many programs don’t allow patients to use their personal cell phones. You also might not be allowed to bring certain items into the center, such as mouthwash that contains alcohol.
A typical day at an inpatient treatment center is filled with different therapies and services. Here are some of the most common types of treatments available in inpatient drug treatment:

What Happens After Inpatient Drug Treatment?

Inpatient is only one phase in the recovery process. To maintain your recovery, it’s essential to receive long-term support after inpatient drug treatment is complete. As you prepare to graduate from inpatient, your treatment team will work with you to create a discharge plan.

Patients usually continue to receive professional treatment services after leaving inpatient drug treatment. Some move on to an intensive outpatient program, which offers day therapies and services while the patient lives at home. Sober living programs can be a helpful resource for transitioning back into your normal routine, too. Individual therapy sessions and psychiatric medication management are also valuable services as you continue the recovery journey.

Dear Renewal Lodge Visitors,

My name is John Bruna, co-founder of the Mindfulness in Recovery® Institute, and more importantly, a grateful member of the recovery community. I am incredibly fortunate to have found my recovery in 1984. Of course, I did not achieve continuous recovery through willpower or my own efforts, but through the guidance and caring support of countless others that selflessly taught me how to live through the 12 Steps.

My journey of recovery brought this once homeless, shame-based, traumatized, insecure young man to a life far beyond anything I could have ever imagined. I discovered self-worth, the joy of helping others, the gifts of parenting and grandparenting, and most importantly the ability to live a meaningful and purposeful life with integrity.

One of the greatest gifts of recovery is that I have the opportunity to give back and help others discover their self-worth, dignity, and the skills to fully live lives that they find truly meaningful. This is the inspiration for developing the skills of Mindfulness in Recovery® (MIR) to meet the needs of new generations struggling with alcohol and other substance use disorders. MIR is a set of evidence-based skills designed to help people fully integrate their tools of recovery in ways that are personalized, practical, and in alignment with their deepest values.

While we train counselors and therapists throughout the United States and abroad, I personally have chosen to work directly with the amazing team and clients at Renewal Lodge to develop the model MIR 12-step program for the nation. I choose Renewal Lodge because of the vision of its mission and the dedication of its team. Renewal Lodge is an extremely rare environment in which the staff embodies the very mindfulness and 12-step practices and skills they offer their clients. The results have been beyond my expectations. It is an honor to be here and I treasure my personal time with every client I meet.

With Gratitude,

John Bruna
