Austin's Substance Abuse Landscape

Austin may be known for its live music and vibrant culture, but like many densely populated cities, it’s also a hotbed of substance abuse issues. We’ve seen firsthand how addiction affects individuals, families, and our community as a whole. From illicit substances to prescription drugs, the face of drug addiction in Austin is diverse and complex.

On the other hand, Austin is home to a robust network of treatment options, support groups, and professionals dedicated to helping people find their path to recovery. And that’s where we come in.

The Disease of Addiction in Austin Doesn’t Discriminate

Addiction is a disease that doesn’t discriminate – it affects people from all walks of life, from students at UT Austin to tech professionals and everyone in between.

Families should know the following about addiction:

  • Addiction is a chronic disease, not a moral failing
  • It often co-occurs with mental health issues
  • Genetic, environmental, and personal factors all play a role
  • Recovery is possible with the right support and treatment

What's Different About the Drug Rehab Program at Renewal Lodge

Renewal Lodge offers an inpatient drug rehab program in a dual-diagnosis setting that blends the 12 Steps with Mindfulness to create a groundbreaking modality for treatment. Mindfulness is an ancient practice of being aware of your thoughts, attitudes, beliefs, and emotions.

Mindfulness is not religiously affiliated, but instead helps our clients deepen their understanding of sobriety. Mindfulness practices complement Alcoholics Anonymous 12 Steps. This cutting edge treatment approach is supported by world-class clinical and therapeutic support.

What Makes Our Program Unique:

  • Residential treatment programs are offered for 30, 60 or 90 days
  • Our facility is co-ed but utilizes gender-specific process groups six days a week
  • We practice an integrated treatment approach by combining evidenced-based mindfulness skills and 12 step modalities.
  • Our programs include recovery-based lectures, process groups, meditation, and individual treatment plans

Why We Use Mindfulness in Our Austin Drug Rehab Program

Mindfulness helps our clients become more aware of what is going on in their minds and in their environments. It also helps them more deeply connect with their emotions, beliefs, and core values.

One of the primary benefits of mindfulness is that it helps our clients become consciously able to create a meaningful and purposeful life that is driven by action, attention, values, wisdom and an open heart.

Mindfulness is a game-changer for many of our clients:

  • Helps to manage cravings
  • Reduces stress and anxiety
  • Improves emotional regulation
  • Enhances overall well-being

Dual Diagnosis and Mental Health Support

Our clinical team understands that suffering from a dual diagnosis condition can add a layer of complexity in receiving treatment. Some of the most common questions we encounter are: Which came first, the mental health condition or the addiction? Which should be treated foremost?

In our experience, persons with a dual diagnosis respond better to treatment methods that address mental health in conjunction with substance use disorders. This form of treatment not only improves recovery outcomes, but also advances physical, emotional, and general functioning throughout the treatment episode and beyond.

Family Involvement in the Recovery Process

Our family program is designed to educate families on addiction and recovery while moving through the treatment process.

In many cases, families unknowingly contribute to the problem through codependency and enabling, even though their intentions are born out of love and concern.

Recovery improves when all who have been impacted by addiction accept help and take action to heal. As with any disease, some individuals are affected more than others, and it will be important for those impacted to start their own journey of healing.

Embracing the Culture of Austin in Recovery

One of the beautiful things about getting sober in Austin is the opportunity to rediscover the city through fresh eyes. Austin’s vibrant culture can be a powerful ally in recovery:

  • Music Scene: Attend live shows and festivals (sober tent options are often available)
  • Outdoor Activities: Hike the Greenbelt, swim at Barton Springs, or kayak on the Colorado River
  • Food Culture: Explore Austin’s famous food scene (BBQ and tacos, anyone?)
  • Creative Arts: Engage with Austin’s thriving arts community through workshops and events

Recovery isn’t about giving up your life – it’s about reclaiming it. And Austin offers countless ways to do just that.

A Nationally Recognized Name Right Here in Texas

Renewal Lodge is regularly featured on some of the Nation’s most prominent and well-known media outlets.

Dear Renewal Lodge Visitors,

My name is John Bruna, co-founder of the Mindfulness in Recovery® Institute, and more importantly, a grateful member of the recovery community. I am incredibly fortunate to have found my recovery in 1984. Of course, I did not achieve continuous recovery through willpower or my own efforts, but through the guidance and caring support of countless others that selflessly taught me how to live through the 12 Steps.

My journey of recovery brought this once homeless, shame-based, traumatized, insecure young man to a life far beyond anything I could have ever imagined. I discovered self-worth, the joy of helping others, the gifts of parenting and grandparenting, and most importantly the ability to live a meaningful and purposeful life with integrity.

One of the greatest gifts of recovery is that I have the opportunity to give back and help others discover their self-worth, dignity, and the skills to fully live lives that they find truly meaningful. This is the inspiration for developing the skills of Mindfulness in Recovery® (MIR) to meet the needs of new generations struggling with alcohol and other substance use disorders. MIR is a set of evidence-based skills designed to help people fully integrate their tools of recovery in ways that are personalized, practical, and in alignment with their deepest values.

While we train counselors and therapists throughout the United States and abroad, I personally have chosen to work directly with the amazing team and clients at Renewal Lodge to develop the model MIR 12-step program for the nation. I choose Renewal Lodge because of the vision of its mission and the dedication of its team. Renewal Lodge is an extremely rare environment in which the staff embodies the very mindfulness and 12-step practices and skills they offer their clients. The results have been beyond my expectations. It is an honor to be here and I treasure my personal time with every client I meet.

With Gratitude,

John Bruna
