What Makes Us Different

Renewal Lodge is the The Nation’s Only Mindfulness In Recovery (MIR)® Program

What sets Renewal Lodge apart from other treatment programs is our commitment to results. To create something new, we adopted scientifically-proven, evidence-based therapies and intertwined them with Mindfulness and the 12 Steps.

We do this because it works!

Most people spend a majority of their life distracted from or unaware of their true nature. They swing from past to present believing the fantasies and nightmares that an untrained Mind is prone to. Every single person is capable of fully awakening to the balanced and sacred present moment. Renewal Lodge imbues programming with activities, training, and skill development that allows the client to discover the awesome power of consciousness and clear awareness.
What does it mean to live with Intention? Addiction and emotional disorders rob us of a life of purpose and true intention by hijacking our mind and forcing us to live in a primitive, egocentric mode. Our staff and curriculum have created protocols to assist the client in cultivating the most noble of virtues with purpose and goodwill. To live with intention is to carry out actions that bring about fulfillment through meaningful purpose in our lives and, especially, in the lives of everyone around us.
One of the most important elements of a Mindfulness practice is the complete acceptance of our reality. This way of relating to our thoughts and emotions as well as that of others is also called Non-judgmental. How often do we spend our lives hanging on to pleasurable events and desperately pushing uncomfortable ones away while basing happiness on this push/pull mechanism? Unconditional acceptance of our thoughts and emotions creates a gentle embrace of the Present moment, cutting off the roots of unnecessary stress, and paving the way for a more peaceful and tranquil relationship to the Mind.
The 12 Steps, created in 1938 and written by Bill Wilson, a co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, quickly became a prominent and promising treatment for what seemed a hopeless disease. Renewal Lodge is dedicated to creating a rich, immersive 12 step experience for every single person that steps on our grounds. The time-honored, road-tested spiritual principles of the 12 steps are the other cornerstone of our treatment center. Rigorous application of the 12 steps involves honesty, self-examination, discipline, and service to others. The principles set forth by the 12 steps are much more than merely staying clean; they are truly a design for living. The steps shift a person’s focus from self-centered motives to a genuine concern for others. By fostering the conditions for a personality change or spiritual awakening, millions of people in over 150 countries live a happy, joyous, and free existence. These men and women have recovered from addiction, and we strive to help your loved one walk this same path.

Dear Renewal Lodge Visitors,

My name is John Bruna, co-founder of the Mindfulness in Recovery® Institute, and more importantly, a grateful member of the recovery community. I am incredibly fortunate to have found my recovery in 1984. Of course, I did not achieve continuous recovery through willpower or my own efforts, but through the guidance and caring support of countless others that selflessly taught me how to live through the 12 Steps.

My journey of recovery brought this once homeless, shame-based, traumatized, insecure young man to a life far beyond anything I could have ever imagined. I discovered self-worth, the joy of helping others, the gifts of parenting and grandparenting, and most importantly the ability to live a meaningful and purposeful life with integrity.

One of the greatest gifts of recovery is that I have the opportunity to give back and help others discover their self-worth, dignity, and the skills to fully live lives that they find truly meaningful. This is the inspiration for developing the skills of Mindfulness in Recovery® (MIR) to meet the needs of new generations struggling with alcohol and other substance use disorders. MIR is a set of evidence-based skills designed to help people fully integrate their tools of recovery in ways that are personalized, practical, and in alignment with their deepest values.

While we train counselors and therapists throughout the United States and abroad, I personally have chosen to work directly with the amazing team and clients at Renewal Lodge to develop the model MIR 12-step program for the nation. I choose Renewal Lodge because of the vision of its mission and the dedication of its team. Renewal Lodge is an extremely rare environment in which the staff embodies the very mindfulness and 12-step practices and skills they offer their clients. The results have been beyond my expectations. It is an honor to be here and I treasure my personal time with every client I meet.

With Gratitude,

John Bruna
