Through these treatments, individuals struggling with mood disturbances can find relief, regain control, and chart a path toward a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Understanding Mood Disorders

Mood disorders represent a group of mental health conditions characterized by significant disruptions in a person’s emotional state, which can profoundly impact their overall well-being, daily functioning, and relationships. These disorders go beyond typical emotional ups and downs and can persist for extended periods, often requiring professional intervention. Key examples of mood disorders include:
Ongoing feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and disinterest in daily activities.

Cycles of depressive episodes contrasted with manic episodes, which involve feelings of euphoria, increased energy, and, sometimes, risky behavior.

This form of depression is linked to seasonal changes, most commonly experienced during the winter months when daylight is reduced.
A chronic form of depression where symptoms are milder than MDD but last longer.

While distinct in their manifestation, each of these conditions underscores the complex nature of mood disturbances and the need for tailored treatments.

The Connection Between Mood Disorders and Substance Abuse

Mood disorders and substance use disorders frequently co-exist, presenting a complicated array of symptoms that pose challenges for effective diagnosis and management. People with mood disorders, including major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, or seasonal affective disorder, frequently turn to substances like alcohol, prescription drugs, or illegal narcotics as a means of self-soothing. This can temporarily relieve their emotional turmoil or enhance euphoric states.

However, substance use can also worsen the symptoms of mood disorders, resulting in a self-perpetuating cycle of emotional instability and dependency. This complex interplay is often termed a “dual diagnosis,” and it necessitates specialized dual diagnosis treatment. This approach aims to concurrently address both conditions to improve the likelihood of a successful and sustainable recovery.

Treatment Options for Mood Disorder and Substance Use Disorder

Various treatment options are available for those struggling with the dual diagnosis of mood disorders and substance use disorders. These treatments are often multidisciplinary, combining medical, psychological, and social support approaches to address the complexity of the condition. Key treatment options include:

Psychotherapy:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and individual counseling focus on identifying triggers and improving coping mechanisms.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment Centers:

These specialized centers offer integrated treatment plans that address both conditions simultaneously, featuring a team of psychiatrists, psychologists, and addiction specialists.

Alternative Therapies:

Joining support groups for those with co-occurring personality disorders and substance abuse offers a safe space to share experiences, receive validation, and learn healthy coping methods.

Support Groups:

Peer-led groups like Alcoholics Anonymous or mood disorder-specific support circles offer emotional and moral support.

Relapse Prevention:

Educational programs teach coping strategies and relapse prevention skills, equipping individuals for long-term management of their conditions.

Family Therapy:

Family therapy involves family members in recovery, helping them understand family dynamics, address systemic issues, and create a supportive environment for individual healing.

Dear Renewal Lodge Visitors,

My name is John Bruna, co-founder of the Mindfulness in Recovery® Institute, and more importantly, a grateful member of the recovery community. I am incredibly fortunate to have found my recovery in 1984. Of course, I did not achieve continuous recovery through willpower or my own efforts, but through the guidance and caring support of countless others that selflessly taught me how to live through the 12 Steps.

My journey of recovery brought this once homeless, shame-based, traumatized, insecure young man to a life far beyond anything I could have ever imagined. I discovered self-worth, the joy of helping others, the gifts of parenting and grandparenting, and most importantly the ability to live a meaningful and purposeful life with integrity.

One of the greatest gifts of recovery is that I have the opportunity to give back and help others discover their self-worth, dignity, and the skills to fully live lives that they find truly meaningful. This is the inspiration for developing the skills of Mindfulness in Recovery® (MIR) to meet the needs of new generations struggling with alcohol and other substance use disorders. MIR is a set of evidence-based skills designed to help people fully integrate their tools of recovery in ways that are personalized, practical, and in alignment with their deepest values.

While we train counselors and therapists throughout the United States and abroad, I personally have chosen to work directly with the amazing team and clients at Renewal Lodge to develop the model MIR 12-step program for the nation. I choose Renewal Lodge because of the vision of its mission and the dedication of its team. Renewal Lodge is an extremely rare environment in which the staff embodies the very mindfulness and 12-step practices and skills they offer their clients. The results have been beyond my expectations. It is an honor to be here and I treasure my personal time with every client I meet.

With Gratitude,

John Bruna
