Dual Diagnosis Treatment near Waco, TX

The Key To Lasting Recovery: Dual Diagnosis

90-day-rehab-texas

Many Waco, TX residents battle substance abuse. Often, addiction springs from underlying mental health issues. That’s why it’s important not to point fingers at individuals struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues. Their addiction isn’t their fault. Lasting healing can only happen when we treat the root cause behind the substance abuse.

Renewal Lodge is a dual diagnosis treatment facility for Waco, TX. This means we treat addiction and underlying mental health issues. This is how patients reclaim a fulfilling life.

What Is Dual Diagnosis?

Just like the name suggests, dual diagnosis means more than one diagnosis. When it comes to substance abuse, dual diagnosis involves people who grapple with not only drug and/or alcohol addiction but also varying mental health disorders.

Imagine someone battling a substance abuse disorder while also coping with a mental health issue like PTSD, bipolar disorder, or intense anxiety. They’re facing very unique challenges and require personalized treatment tailored to their specific dual diagnosis.

Now, going through rehab that solely tackles substance abuse won’t cut it if a person also faces mental health challenges. Typically, if only one aspect is treated, the individual won’t make a full recovery from either condition. Dual diagnosis treatment dives into the core problems. It paves the way for genuine, long-lasting recovery from both substance abuse and mental health issues.

At Renewal Lodge, our substance abuse rehab near Waco, TX provides dual diagnosis treatment. In fact, we’re the only rehab facility in the country that combines Mindfulness In Recovery with this approach. Thanks to our mental health assessments and evidence-based therapeutic techniques, our patients take remarkable steps towards conquering addiction.

How do you treat a dual diagnosis?

Renewal Lodge has crafted an effective method for treating dual diagnosis on our campus near Waco, TX. This approach not only leads to lasting recovery from substance abuse. It also increases the overall well-being of our patients.

The first step in treating dual diagnosis is an accurate assessment. This involves pinpointing both the substance-related issue and the mental health disorder. The team at Renewal Lodge then designs a customized treatment plan to health both conditions.

What are the most common conditions with a dual diagnosis in Waco?

Studies have found that around 50% of individuals dealing with a substance use disorder also grapple with a mental health condition. Let’s explore some of the main mental health disorders that contribute to a dual diagnosis:

What medication is used for dual diagnosis?

Customizing medication according to the needs of the patient is essential. That’s why Renewal Lodge meticulously assesses each patient to create the optimal treatment plan. Common medications for dual diagnosis are:

  • Antidepressants – Most commonly prescribed for patients who deal with depression and anxiety disorders
  • Mood Stabilizers – Stabilize patients’ moods and reduce symptoms of bipolar disorder
  • Stimulant medications – Treat Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and reduce the risk of substance abuse relapse
  • Buprenorphine – Help patients manage alcohol or opioid withdrawal symptoms
  • And others

How Does Dual Diagnosis Affect Families in Waco and McLennon County?

Recent studies have found that the mortality rate of people struggling with both mental health issues and substance abuse disorders in McLennan County are similar to the rate of the entire state of Texas. Behind these staggering statistics are hurting families. That’s why it’s important that families are educated on how to help their loved one who’s struggling with dual diagnosis.

While every family member naturally wishes their loved one would recover, very few have the tools to care for and assist someone who’s struggling with a dual diagnosis. In most situations, the person dealing with a dual diagnosis and their family end up feeling frustrated and helpless if they don’t turn to professional aid.

When left untreated, dual diagnosis often leads to strained relationships, upheaval within the family system, financial challenges, and other hardships.

At Renewal Lodge, we’re fully aware of the challenges that dual diagnosis places upon families. This is why we’ve introduced our Family Program. This recovery program helps families understand addiction and mental health disorders. We provide families the support to heal and recover.

Is dual diagnosis treatment successful?

At Renewal Lodge, we customize treatment to address the challenges that each patient faces.

Integrated treatment is the best approach when dealing with dual diagnosis. That means treating both the substance abuse disorder and the mental health disorder at the same time. This integrated strategy helps us personalize care to each patient’s situation.

Studies show that patients who receive integrated treatment experience

  • Fewer arrests
  • Reduced hospitalization
  • Improved quality of life
  • Recovery for both disorders
  • Increased housing stability
  • Improvement in psychiatric functioning
  • Reduced or discontinued substance use

Dear Renewal Lodge Visitors,

My name is John Bruna, co-founder of the Mindfulness in Recovery® Institute, and more importantly, a grateful member of the recovery community. I am incredibly fortunate to have found my recovery in 1984. Of course, I did not achieve continuous recovery through willpower or my own efforts, but through the guidance and caring support of countless others that selflessly taught me how to live through the 12 Steps.

My journey of recovery brought this once homeless, shame-based, traumatized, insecure young man to a life far beyond anything I could have ever imagined. I discovered self-worth, the joy of helping others, the gifts of parenting and grandparenting, and most importantly the ability to live a meaningful and purposeful life with integrity.

One of the greatest gifts of recovery is that I have the opportunity to give back and help others discover their self-worth, dignity, and the skills to fully live lives that they find truly meaningful. This is the inspiration for developing the skills of Mindfulness in Recovery® (MIR) to meet the needs of new generations struggling with alcohol and other substance use disorders. MIR is a set of evidence-based skills designed to help people fully integrate their tools of recovery in ways that are personalized, practical, and in alignment with their deepest values.

While we train counselors and therapists throughout the United States and abroad, I personally have chosen to work directly with the amazing team and clients at Renewal Lodge to develop the model MIR 12-step program for the nation. I choose Renewal Lodge because of the vision of its mission and the dedication of its team. Renewal Lodge is an extremely rare environment in which the staff embodies the very mindfulness and 12-step practices and skills they offer their clients. The results have been beyond my expectations. It is an honor to be here and I treasure my personal time with every client I meet.

With Gratitude,

John Bruna
