Understanding Alcoholism: More Than Just a Habit

Alcoholism is often misconceived as merely a bad habit or a matter of willpower, but in reality, it’s a complex and multifaceted disorder with deep roots in both physiological and psychological factors. This condition goes beyond the occasional overindulgence; it’s characterized by a chronic, overwhelming craving for alcohol, often accompanied by an increased tolerance and withdrawal symptoms in its absence.

How Alcohol Affects the Brain

Alcohol has both immediate and long-term effects on the brain, causing significant changes in its function and structure. From a scientific perspective, alcohol impacts neurotransmitter systems, particularly those related to inhibition and reward. It stimulates the release of dopamine in the brain’s reward centers, which initially produces pleasurable sensations when drinking. However, prolonged alcohol use leads to the brain adapting to these increased neurotransmitter levels, resulting in tolerance and dependence.

Additionally, alcohol inhibits the activity of the neurotransmitter glutamate, leading to a decrease in brain activity and the sedative effects commonly associated with heavy drinking. Over time, chronic alcohol abuse can cause substantial damage to the brain, affecting areas responsible for memory, decision-making, and behavior control. This damage not only contributes to the persistence of addiction but also leads to cognitive deficits and emotional disturbances.

Recognizing how alcohol alters brain chemistry is crucial in understanding the severity of alcoholism and the importance of its treatment.

Early Warning Signs of Alcohol Abuse

Recognizing the early warning signs of alcohol abuse is crucial in order to address the issue before it escalates. Some common indicators include:
A person may need to consume larger amounts of alcohol to achieve the desired effect.
An individual may experience strong urges or cravings for alcohol, even when it is not appropriate or necessary.
Alcohol abuse can lead to a decline in performance at work or school, as well as neglecting personal and social obligations.
When alcohol consumption is reduced or stopped, a person may experience symptoms such as tremors, anxiety, or irritability.
Alcohol abuse can cause mood swings, aggression, or a loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyable.
Long-term alcohol abuse can lead to liver damage, cardiovascular problems, and other serious health complications.
It is important to note that these early warning signs may vary from person to person, and not everyone will exhibit all of these indicators. However, if you or someone you know is displaying any of these signs, it is crucial to seek help and support from healthcare professionals or addiction specialists. Early intervention can greatly increase the chances of successful treatment and recovery.

Alcoholism doesn’t just impact one person’s life. It ripples through the whole family, leaving scars. Many inpatient rehabs in Waco, TX mainly treat the person dealing with addition.

At Renewal Lodge, we know how tough it is for the families, too. That’s why we offer our Family Program.

Emotional Intelligence

A lot of people end up using drugs and alcohol as a way to cope with challenging emotions or feelings.

Dear Renewal Lodge Visitors,

My name is John Bruna, co-founder of the Mindfulness in Recovery® Institute, and more importantly, a grateful member of the recovery community. I am incredibly fortunate to have found my recovery in 1984. Of course, I did not achieve continuous recovery through willpower or my own efforts, but through the guidance and caring support of countless others that selflessly taught me how to live through the 12 Steps.

My journey of recovery brought this once homeless, shame-based, traumatized, insecure young man to a life far beyond anything I could have ever imagined. I discovered self-worth, the joy of helping others, the gifts of parenting and grandparenting, and most importantly the ability to live a meaningful and purposeful life with integrity.

One of the greatest gifts of recovery is that I have the opportunity to give back and help others discover their self-worth, dignity, and the skills to fully live lives that they find truly meaningful. This is the inspiration for developing the skills of Mindfulness in Recovery® (MIR) to meet the needs of new generations struggling with alcohol and other substance use disorders. MIR is a set of evidence-based skills designed to help people fully integrate their tools of recovery in ways that are personalized, practical, and in alignment with their deepest values.

While we train counselors and therapists throughout the United States and abroad, I personally have chosen to work directly with the amazing team and clients at Renewal Lodge to develop the model MIR 12-step program for the nation. I choose Renewal Lodge because of the vision of its mission and the dedication of its team. Renewal Lodge is an extremely rare environment in which the staff embodies the very mindfulness and 12-step practices and skills they offer their clients. The results have been beyond my expectations. It is an honor to be here and I treasure my personal time with every client I meet.

With Gratitude,

John Bruna
