What’s the Difference Between Outpatient and In-patient Rehab?

You may be asking, “Do I need an out-patient or in-patient rehab in Tyler?”
There are three important differences between in-patient and outpatient rehab.

1

The Level of Care

In-patient rehab provides round-the-clock care, while out-patient rehab is less intensive, providing treatment only during scheduled appointments.

2

Length of Treatment

In-patient rehab usually lasts a few weeks or months. Out-patient rehabs in Tyler, such as UTHealth East Texas, can last anywhere from a few months to a few years.

3

Location of Care

In-patient care means patients live at a treatment center. Out-patient care lets individuals remain at home, and attend regular visits to a doctor’s office, clinic, or mental health center.

What To Expect At An Outpatient Rehab

Initial Assessment

The first step in outpatient rehab is usually the initial assessment. A Counselor or addiction specialist will evaluate the individual to determine the level of addiction. Then, they will determine the best type of treatment.

Therapy

The patient is expected to go to individual therapy, group therapy, and/or family therapy. These therapy sessions happen a few times a week and teach patients coping skills and healthy ways to manage triggers.

Educational Classes

Often, outpatient programs offer workshops and classes that cover topics like relapse prevention, exercise, nutrition, and stress management.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

Depending on the patient’s needs, outpatient rehab programs sometimes offer MAT. This program is designed to help patients manage withdrawal and cravings by using medications.

What To Expect At A 90-Day In-Patient Rehab

How successful is in-patient vs. out-patient drug treatment?

In Tyler and East Texas, outpatient rehab can be successful for some people. However, many people need to remove themselves from their community and environment for a time to experience lasting recovery.

This is especially true for people with severe substance use disorders.

The challenge with out-patient rehab is that patients remain within their community while in rehab. Your community shapes your behavior. So individuals whose social circles include others who also suffer from substance abuse disorder often struggle to find recovery unless they leave their community. In fact, studies show that one reason relapse is common in East Texas in particular is because the community here is very tight-knit, and many who struggle with substance abuse remain in community with others who also struggle.

The advantage of in-patient rehab is that you are removed from your environment and community and do not have access to substances. Renewal Lodge helps you heal both psychologically and physically. Our 90-day rehab includes full evaluations, mental health screening, onsite nursing, medication management, addiction medicine, individualized therapy, mindfulness training, family program, discharge planning, and more. Our in-patient drug treatment near Tyler provides 24/7 support.

Dear Renewal Lodge Visitors,

My name is John Bruna, co-founder of the Mindfulness in Recovery® Institute, and more importantly, a grateful member of the recovery community. I am incredibly fortunate to have found my recovery in 1984. Of course, I did not achieve continuous recovery through willpower or my own efforts, but through the guidance and caring support of countless others that selflessly taught me how to live through the 12 Steps.

My journey of recovery brought this once homeless, shame-based, traumatized, insecure young man to a life far beyond anything I could have ever imagined. I discovered self-worth, the joy of helping others, the gifts of parenting and grandparenting, and most importantly the ability to live a meaningful and purposeful life with integrity.

One of the greatest gifts of recovery is that I have the opportunity to give back and help others discover their self-worth, dignity, and the skills to fully live lives that they find truly meaningful. This is the inspiration for developing the skills of Mindfulness in Recovery® (MIR) to meet the needs of new generations struggling with alcohol and other substance use disorders. MIR is a set of evidence-based skills designed to help people fully integrate their tools of recovery in ways that are personalized, practical, and in alignment with their deepest values.

While we train counselors and therapists throughout the United States and abroad, I personally have chosen to work directly with the amazing team and clients at Renewal Lodge to develop the model MIR 12-step program for the nation. I choose Renewal Lodge because of the vision of its mission and the dedication of its team. Renewal Lodge is an extremely rare environment in which the staff embodies the very mindfulness and 12-step practices and skills they offer their clients. The results have been beyond my expectations. It is an honor to be here and I treasure my personal time with every client I meet.

With Gratitude,

John Bruna
