Dual Diagnosis: The Key To Lasting Recovery

90-day-rehab-texas

Many people struggle with substance abuse near Houston, TX. Often, addiction arises from underlying mental health disorders. This is why we cannot blame individuals who suffer from substance abuse, as their addiction is not their fault. To achieve long-term healing, it’s crucial to address and treat the root causes of substance abuse.

Renewal Lodge is a dual diagnosis treatment facility for Houston, TX. We treat both the addiction and the underlying mental health disorder. This is how our clients regain control of their lives.

What Is Dual Diagnosis?

As the name implies, dual diagnosis refers to more than one diagnosis. In the context of substance abuse, dual diagnosis refers to individuals who suffer from both drug and/or alcohol addiction and one or more mental health disorders.

As you can imagine, an individual who has a substance use disorder and a mental health disorder such as PTSD, bi-polar, or severe anxiety, faces a unique challenge and needs personalized treatment to address their individual dual diagnosis.

Rehab treatment that addresses substance abuse alone is insufficient if an individual also has a mental health disorder. Most often, if only one condition is treated, the patient will not recovery from either. Dual diagnosis treatment addresses the root issues and helps people find real, lasting recovery from both substance abuse and mental health conditions.

Renewal Lodge’s substance abuse rehab near Houston, TX provides dual diagnosis treatment, and is the only Mindfulness In Recovery rehab facility in the nation. Through our mental health evaluations and evidence-based therapeutic approaches, our clients experience remarkable strides towards overcoming addiction.

How do you treat a dual diagnosis?

Renewal Lodge has developed a successful approach to treating dual diagnosis on our campus near Houston, TX. Through this treatment, patients experience both long-term recovery from substance abuse and enhanced overall wellness.

The first step in treating dual diagnosis is an accurate assessment. This involves identifying both the substance disorder and the mental health disorder. The team at Renewal Lodge then tailors a treatment plan to heal both conditions.

What are the most common conditions with a dual diagnosis?

Studies estimate that as many as 50% of individuals with a substance use disorder also have a mental health disorder. Below are the most common mental health disorders that lead to a dual diagnosis?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and substance abuse are 25% more likely to occur together than separately.

What medication is used for dual diagnosis?

Medication should be customized to the patient’s specific needs. That’s why Renewal Lodge carefully assesses each patient to determine the best treatment plan. Common medications for dual diagnosis include:

  • Antidepressants – Most commonly prescribed for patients who deal with depression and anxiety disorders
  • Mood Stabilizers – Stabilize patients’ moods and reduce symptoms of bipolar disorder
  • Stimulant medications – Treat Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and reduce the risk of substance abuse relapse
  • Buprenorphine – Help patients manage alcohol or opioid withdrawal symptoms
  • And others

How does dual diagnosis affect families in Houston?

Studies show that 8.9% of the Houston area population  (369,000 individuals) are classified as having a substance use disorder, and 5.2% of the population 189,000 individuals) may be classified as having a mental health disorder. No doubt, a significant overlap exists between these numbers. Behind each of these numbers is not just a struggling individual, but a family dealing with the heavy weight of a dual diagnosis.

While every member of the family wants to see their loved one get better, very few are equipped to properly care for and help their struggling loved one. In most cases, both the individual with dual diagnosis and their family will eventually feel frustrated and helpless if they don’t seek out professional help.

Untreated dual diagnosis often results in strained relationships, chaotic family units, financial difficulties, and other life hardships.

At Renewal Lodge, we understand the difficulties dual diagnosis imposes on a family. That’s why we offer our Family Program. This helps families understand the complexities of addiction and mental health disorders. We provide a supportive environment where families come together to heal and recover from dual diagnosis.

Is dual diagnosis treatment successful?

At Renewal Lodge, we tailor our treatment to meet each patient’s challenges and circumstances.

The most effective way to address dual diagnosis is through integrated treatment. This involves treating the substance abuse disorder and mental health disorder simultaneously. This integrated approach allows us to provide holistic care that takes into account the unique challenges and complexities of each patient’s condition.

Studies show that patients who receive integrated treatment experience:

  • Reduced or discontinued substance use
  • Recovery for both disorders
  • Improved quality of life
  • increased housing stability
  • Improvement in psychiatric functioning
  • Reduced hospitalization
  • Fewer arrests

Dear Renewal Lodge Visitors,

My name is John Bruna, co-founder of the Mindfulness in Recovery® Institute, and more importantly, a grateful member of the recovery community. I am incredibly fortunate to have found my recovery in 1984. Of course, I did not achieve continuous recovery through willpower or my own efforts, but through the guidance and caring support of countless others that selflessly taught me how to live through the 12 Steps.

My journey of recovery brought this once homeless, shame-based, traumatized, insecure young man to a life far beyond anything I could have ever imagined. I discovered self-worth, the joy of helping others, the gifts of parenting and grandparenting, and most importantly the ability to live a meaningful and purposeful life with integrity.

One of the greatest gifts of recovery is that I have the opportunity to give back and help others discover their self-worth, dignity, and the skills to fully live lives that they find truly meaningful. This is the inspiration for developing the skills of Mindfulness in Recovery® (MIR) to meet the needs of new generations struggling with alcohol and other substance use disorders. MIR is a set of evidence-based skills designed to help people fully integrate their tools of recovery in ways that are personalized, practical, and in alignment with their deepest values.

While we train counselors and therapists throughout the United States and abroad, I personally have chosen to work directly with the amazing team and clients at Renewal Lodge to develop the model MIR 12-step program for the nation. I choose Renewal Lodge because of the vision of its mission and the dedication of its team. Renewal Lodge is an extremely rare environment in which the staff embodies the very mindfulness and 12-step practices and skills they offer their clients. The results have been beyond my expectations. It is an honor to be here and I treasure my personal time with every client I meet.

With Gratitude,

John Bruna
