Understanding Alcohol Addiction

Frequently known as alcoholism, this addiction is a persistent state where an individual struggles to control or stop drinking alcohol, despite facing adverse effects in their social interactions, professional life, or health. It’s not just a lack of willpower but involves complex interactions between genetics, environment, and psychology.

The impact of alcohol addiction is far-reaching, affecting not only the individual but also their family, friends, and community. Alcohol addiction can result in significant health issues such as liver disease, heart disease, and a heightened risk of various cancers. Moreover, it frequently exacerbates mental health issues, including depression and anxiety, and can give rise to financial, legal, and interpersonal difficulties.

Signs and Symptoms of Alcohol Addiction

Recognizing the signs and symptoms of alcohol addiction is crucial for early intervention. These can vary but often include:

The Impact of Alcohol Addiction

The impact of alcohol addiction on both health and relationships is profound and multifaceted. Physically, chronic alcohol abuse can lead to a host of serious health issues, including liver disease, cardiovascular problems, and an increased risk of various cancers. It can also intensify mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, and lead to cognitive impairments.

On a relational level, alcohol addiction often strains ties with family, friends, and colleagues. It can erode trust, provoke conflict, and lead to neglect of familial and social responsibilities. This strain can manifest in marital discord, strained parent-child relationships, and a loss of social connections, as the individual’s focus on alcohol consumption takes precedence over their relationships. The ripple effects of these damaged relationships further complicate the individual’s ability to seek and receive support, creating a cycle that can be challenging to break without professional intervention and a strong support system.

Mindfulness is a cornerstone of recovery at Renewal Lodge. By helping you understand your feelings and how they affect your behavior, we can prepare you for a life of sobriety.

The 12 Steps

Alcoholics Anonymous is one of the most successful recovery programs ever devised. We institute a treatment plan based on the 12 steps outlined in the big book.

Addiction frequently co-occurs with mental health disorders, and Renewal Lodge has the staff and experience to treat both, paying the way for more successful long-term recovery.

Your 4-Part Recovery Program

STEP 1

Mindfulness In Recovery Treatment

Addiction has tread behavioral pathways in your brain. Part of a successful treatment program must include learning how to identify and change those pathways.

Renewal Lodge is the nation’s only Mindfulness in Recovery (MIR) treatment facility designed to help you identify, understand, and treat the thoughts and behaviors you’ve developed over years of addiction.
.

STEP 2

Family Program

You aren’t the only person who has been affected by addiction. Your family has suffered alongside you for years.

Long-term recovery must include treatment for your family, and Renewal Lodge offers a unique family program to ensure that they get the treatment they need.

Led by Peter Piraino, our family program helps begin the healing process that will help encourage long-term sobriety.

STEP 3

Emotional Intelligence

A lot of alcoholics use alcohol to numb, deaden, and otherwise avoid their feelings. This leaves them with little to no ability to understand or handle their own feelings.

As part of Renewal Lodge’s unique approach to recovery, our team strives to ensure that patients get the training they need to be aware of and understand their feelings.

STEP 4

Discharge & Aftercare

Charting your next steps after inpatient treatment is vital to long-term sobriety.

At Renewal Lodge, we’ll work with you to find what’s best for you. Whether that includes sober living or other outpatient treatment, when you leave our facility, you’ll have a plan to help you continue the path you began with us.

Dear Renewal Lodge Visitors,

My name is John Bruna, co-founder of the Mindfulness in Recovery® Institute, and more importantly, a grateful member of the recovery community. I am incredibly fortunate to have found my recovery in 1984. Of course, I did not achieve continuous recovery through willpower or my own efforts, but through the guidance and caring support of countless others that selflessly taught me how to live through the 12 Steps.

My journey of recovery brought this once homeless, shame-based, traumatized, insecure young man to a life far beyond anything I could have ever imagined. I discovered self-worth, the joy of helping others, the gifts of parenting and grandparenting, and most importantly the ability to live a meaningful and purposeful life with integrity.

One of the greatest gifts of recovery is that I have the opportunity to give back and help others discover their self-worth, dignity, and the skills to fully live lives that they find truly meaningful. This is the inspiration for developing the skills of Mindfulness in Recovery® (MIR) to meet the needs of new generations struggling with alcohol and other substance use disorders. MIR is a set of evidence-based skills designed to help people fully integrate their tools of recovery in ways that are personalized, practical, and in alignment with their deepest values.

While we train counselors and therapists throughout the United States and abroad, I personally have chosen to work directly with the amazing team and clients at Renewal Lodge to develop the model MIR 12-step program for the nation. I choose Renewal Lodge because of the vision of its mission and the dedication of its team. Renewal Lodge is an extremely rare environment in which the staff embodies the very mindfulness and 12-step practices and skills they offer their clients. The results have been beyond my expectations. It is an honor to be here and I treasure my personal time with every client I meet.

With Gratitude,

John Bruna
