Signs and Symptoms of Alcohol Abuse

Recognizing the signs and symptoms of alcohol abuse is crucial for early intervention and effective treatment. Alcohol abuse can manifest in various ways, impacting an individual’s physical health, mental well-being, and daily life. Here are some key indicators to watch for:
  • Increased Tolerance: Needing more alcohol to feel its effects, indicating a growing tolerance.
  • Withdrawal Symptoms: Experiencing symptoms like sweating, shaking, and nausea when not drinking.
  • Neglecting Responsibilities: Failing to meet work, school, or family obligations due to drinking.
  • Loss of Control: Drinking more or for a longer period than intended.
  • Continued Use Despite Problems: Continuing to drink even when it causes physical, social, or interpersonal problems.
  • Social or Recreational Sacrifices: Giving up or reducing social, occupational, or recreational activities because of alcohol use.
  • Risky Behaviors: Engaging in risky behaviors while or after drinking, such as driving under the influence.
These symptoms can vary in intensity and may develop gradually. If you or someone you know is displaying these signs, it may be time to consider seeking help from a professional, such as those at an alcohol rehab facility like Renewal Lodge near Fort Worth. Early recognition and intervention can be key to a successful recovery journey.

How to Help a Loved One Struggling with Alcohol Abuse

Helping a loved one struggling with alcohol abuse requires empathy, patience, and often, professional guidance. The first step is to approach the situation with understanding and without judgment, as shame or guilt can exacerbate their struggles. Open, honest communication is vital; express your concerns in a caring and supportive manner, focusing on the impact of their behavior on their health and well-being. It’s crucial to educate yourself about alcohol addiction to provide informed support and to avoid enabling behaviors.

Encouraging them to seek professional help is often necessary, and offering to assist with finding treatment options, like an alcohol rehab facility, can be immensely helpful. Be prepared for resistance, but remain steadfast in your support. Additionally, consider seeking support for yourself through counseling or support groups, as dealing with a loved one’s alcohol abuse can be emotionally taxing. Remember, while you can offer support and encouragement, the decision to seek help and change must ultimately come from them.

Mindfulness means being aware and nonjudgmental of your thoughts and feelings. It’s a cornerstone of recovery at Renewal Lodge, where we help our patients identify the thoughts and feelings that drive cravings so that they can avoid potential relapse.

The 12 Steps

Twelve Step programs have helped hundreds of thousands of individuals suffering from addiction. They’re vital to modern recovery programs, and Renewal Lodge’s program is informed by The Twelve Steps and Alcoholics Anonymous.

Dual Diagnosis Care

Alcohol is frequently used as a method of coping with mental health problems, emotional distress, anxiety, and general stress. Renewal Lodge offers mental health treatment alongside addiction recovery to give our patients a solid foundation on which to build a sober life.

“...it changed my life.”

I stayed 60 days in treatment and it changed my life… I learned how to be a better person through mindfulness and a 12 step program. I would recommend it to anyone looking for their first or last rehab.

“The only place… that truly delivers on that promise…”

Pretty much every place will promise you a “mind, body, soul” approach to recovery, but this is the only place I’ve been that truly delivers on that promise.

4 Steps To Lasting Recovery

STEP 1

Mindfulness In Recovery Treatment

Initially, addicts use drugs and alcohol to help them cope with life, relationships, and emotional turmoil.

Addiction begins when drugs and alcohol replace other coping mechanisms, leaving behind a void in the addict’s set of life skills.

Renewal Lodge’s Mindfulness in Recovery (MIR) treatment program helps out patients become more aware of their thoughts and feelings while teaching them the life skills needed to manage them.

STEP 2

Family Program

Addicts often inadvertently drag their loved ones into the perils of addiction, making once-loving and healthy relationships dysfunctional.

Because family can be such a vital resource to your recovery, it’s essential that you and they get the help they need.

Renewal Lodge’s family program will help you and your loved ones understand the stages of sobriety while helping your loved ones get the help they need to support you successfully.

STEP 3

Emotional Intelligence

Mindfulness helps you identify your feelings without judging them. Emotional intelligence helps you understand those feelings.

The two go hand-in-hand and form one of the most important skill sets our patients use during and after recovery.

Renewal Lodge will give you the tools you need to avoid emotional dysfunction, strengthen relationships, and maintain your sobriety.

STEP 4

Discharge & Aftercare

Inpatient rehab centers are a good first step, but you’ll need to take several steps afterward.

Throughout your time at Renewal Lodge, our counselors will work with you to help you identify your next steps on the path to long-term sobriety.

Whether that includes outpatient programs, sober living, or anything else, we’ll help you create post-rehab life that will enable you to succeed.

Dear Renewal Lodge Visitors,

My name is John Bruna, co-founder of the Mindfulness in Recovery® Institute, and more importantly, a grateful member of the recovery community. I am incredibly fortunate to have found my recovery in 1984. Of course, I did not achieve continuous recovery through willpower or my own efforts, but through the guidance and caring support of countless others that selflessly taught me how to live through the 12 Steps.

My journey of recovery brought this once homeless, shame-based, traumatized, insecure young man to a life far beyond anything I could have ever imagined. I discovered self-worth, the joy of helping others, the gifts of parenting and grandparenting, and most importantly the ability to live a meaningful and purposeful life with integrity.

One of the greatest gifts of recovery is that I have the opportunity to give back and help others discover their self-worth, dignity, and the skills to fully live lives that they find truly meaningful. This is the inspiration for developing the skills of Mindfulness in Recovery® (MIR) to meet the needs of new generations struggling with alcohol and other substance use disorders. MIR is a set of evidence-based skills designed to help people fully integrate their tools of recovery in ways that are personalized, practical, and in alignment with their deepest values.

While we train counselors and therapists throughout the United States and abroad, I personally have chosen to work directly with the amazing team and clients at Renewal Lodge to develop the model MIR 12-step program for the nation. I choose Renewal Lodge because of the vision of its mission and the dedication of its team. Renewal Lodge is an extremely rare environment in which the staff embodies the very mindfulness and 12-step practices and skills they offer their clients. The results have been beyond my expectations. It is an honor to be here and I treasure my personal time with every client I meet.

With Gratitude,

John Bruna
