What’s the difference between outpatient and inpatient rehab?

You may be wondering, “Should I go to an inpatient or outpatient rehab in Dallas?” Both are valid forms of treatment, and many individuals go through both as a part of a holistic treatment plan. However, there are a few key differences between the two you need to understand.

  1. The level of care: Inpatient rehab offers around-the-clock support in a safe, healing environment. Outpatient rehab is less extensive. It provides treatment during scheduled appointments. Outpatient patients continue to live at home in their community during treatment, which may stunt the treatment’s effectiveness, unless it is a continuation of treatment after inpatient rehab.
  2. Length of treatment: Inpatient rehab usually lasts for several weeks up to a few months. It gives you the concentrated focus to kickstart your recovery journey. Outpatient rehab programs like the one at Baylor Scott and White in Dallas can last for a few months or even a few years.
  3. Location of care: Individuals in inpatient rehab live at the treatment center while they go through rehab. They get to fully immerse themselves in the healing process. Conversely, with outpatient care, patients continue to live at home during treatment. Patients make regular visits to a doctor’s office, clinic, or mental health center.

What To Expect At An Outpatient Rehab

Initial Assessment

During this step, an experienced counselor or addiction specialist determines the extent of your addiction. They'll consider various factors to get a full, clear picture of your situation and then tailor the treatment accordingly.

Therapy

Patients attend individual, group, or family therapy sessions. These sessions typically occur multiple times per week. They focus on teaching you valuable coping skills and healthy strategies to handle triggers that may come your way.

Educational Classes

These workshops equip you with knowledge and tools to help prevent relapse. They also cover areas like exercise, nutrition, and stress management. Their aim is to help you make positive changes in all areas of your life.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

This program helps individuals manage withdrawal symptoms and cravings by incorporating medications into their treatment plan.

How successful is inpatient vs. outpatient drug treatment?

Outpatient rehab alone is rarely effective for most individuals. Lasting recovery often requires a temporary separation from one’s community and environment through inpatient drug treatment near Dallas.

This is particularly crucial for those facing severe substance use disorders. The challenge with outpatient rehab is that individuals remain within their community, which can heavily influence their behavior. When social circles include others struggling with substance abuse, finding recovery becomes an uphill battle without distancing oneself from that community.

Inpatient rehab is successful because it removes individuals from their familiar surroundings, eliminating access to illicit substances. At Renewal Lodge, we help you find psychological and physical healing through our comprehensive 90-day program. It includes evaluations, mental health screening, onsite nursing, medication management, addiction medicine, personalized therapy, mindfulness training, family involvement, discharge planning, and around-the-clock support. Our inpatient drug treatment near Dallas ensures you get 24/7 support throughout your entire journey.

Dear Renewal Lodge Visitors,

My name is John Bruna, co-founder of the Mindfulness in Recovery® Institute, and more importantly, a grateful member of the recovery community. I am incredibly fortunate to have found my recovery in 1984. Of course, I did not achieve continuous recovery through willpower or my own efforts, but through the guidance and caring support of countless others that selflessly taught me how to live through the 12 Steps.

My journey of recovery brought this once homeless, shame-based, traumatized, insecure young man to a life far beyond anything I could have ever imagined. I discovered self-worth, the joy of helping others, the gifts of parenting and grandparenting, and most importantly the ability to live a meaningful and purposeful life with integrity.

One of the greatest gifts of recovery is that I have the opportunity to give back and help others discover their self-worth, dignity, and the skills to fully live lives that they find truly meaningful. This is the inspiration for developing the skills of Mindfulness in Recovery® (MIR) to meet the needs of new generations struggling with alcohol and other substance use disorders. MIR is a set of evidence-based skills designed to help people fully integrate their tools of recovery in ways that are personalized, practical, and in alignment with their deepest values.

While we train counselors and therapists throughout the United States and abroad, I personally have chosen to work directly with the amazing team and clients at Renewal Lodge to develop the model MIR 12-step program for the nation. I choose Renewal Lodge because of the vision of its mission and the dedication of its team. Renewal Lodge is an extremely rare environment in which the staff embodies the very mindfulness and 12-step practices and skills they offer their clients. The results have been beyond my expectations. It is an honor to be here and I treasure my personal time with every client I meet.

With Gratitude,

John Bruna
