What is Mindfulness in Recovery

John Bruna, a former Buddhist monk and someone who has been sober since 1984, started Mindfulness in Recovery to help people with substance use disorders find a deeper path to healing from alcohol and drug addiction.

“With Mindfulness in Recovery’s curriculum and John’s expertise with mindfulness, Renewal Lodge is now the leading center in Texas to treat drug addiction through mindfulness and the 12 steps,” said Peter Piraino, Chief Operation Officer of Burning Tree Programs and Executive Director of Renewal Lodge.

“Our hope is to help our clients recover from addiction and alcoholism with the 12 steps while offering our clients deeper healing through mindfulness and therapy.”

Mindfulness can help one gain insight into what is going on in the minds and in their daily lives. It helps one to get a better relationship with their minds, emotions, behaviors, lives, past, present and their relationships with others.

This deepening awareness can help clients be more honest and thorough when doing their 12 step work at Renewal Lodge.

“Mindfulness is a key that unlocks the door to be present in life,” Bruna said. “And it brings clients extra skills the compliment the spiritual toolkit of the 12 Steps.”

Why Does Renewal Lodge Teach Mindfulness?

The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous states that the problem of alcoholism centers on the mind. The steps force those doing them to look at their emotional states and behaviors that crop up and to look at their shortcomings and assets and have them watch out for when these emotions, behaviors, and shortcomings are present.

Mindfulness practice helps clients more effectively become aware of what is going on in their minds and in their environments, Piraino said.
